With California's new AB 551 legislation in place, urban agriculture will soon blossom, potentially to a larger degree than anticipated. It would be awesome to have the bill re-approved again in 2019–establishing models of success and a check list for prospective urban farms will ensure its continuation. I've been working with the Los Angeles Food Policy Council lately, and this legislation is on the right track for a sustainable, progressive city of the future.
“AB 551, introduced by Assemblyman Philip Y. Ting (D-San Francisco), aims to cultivate urban agriculture by allowing municipalities to lower the property taxes on land of less than three acres, provided the owner dedicates the space to growing food for at least five years.”
This casual and regularly scheduled meeting is an informal way to bring people together to talk about urban farming, the challenges, some solutions, some free resources, the cooperation and the community.
It's totally casual so you can do your produce shopping, come chat, meet other urban farmers and hobby gardeners, bring ideas, sketchbooks, and an open mind. I thought the farmers market would be a great place to talk about this kind of stuff.
This will happen the first and third Sundays at the Encino Farmers Market on Victory, just east of White Oak. I will have signage stating URBAN AG on the grassy Victory side near the blow up bouncy house and animal adoptions. I'll be there between 10am-noon.
